Why Mainstream Media is Failing…

They’ve fired all the editors or at least off shored them to Eastern Moldavia.  This story on Barnes & Noble’s new e-book reader the Nook appeared this morning on CNN.  My tech friends on Facebook were talking about it, so I decided to check it out.

I’m a stickler for details, so I was shocked to see a spelling error in the subheading.  When I re-read the article I saw a grammatical error on the fourth line of the subheading.  This is above the fold stuff people!

The screen shot is above in case they fix the error.  Sadly, they probably won’t.  And we wonder why the press is going down hill…

    are you sure it is pronounced Nook e-reader?

    I hear nookie reader. quite a different matter to heterosexuals.

      Good point! It’s either Nookie book reader or Nookie reader. I wonder if Barnes and Noble’s marketing department thought of that. Just wait for the radio and TV ads! That’ll be a field day.

    I love when blogs point out errors on “mainstream” news sites or newspapers – like they never make any sort of grammatical or spelling mistakes. Copy editors are human and you can bet that someone will be in trouble when the error is found and fixed – it’s called a “beg” in the journalism industry because the copy editor has to beg for their job.

      Sure blogs make mistakes. I know I do, but then I fix them. 24 hours later, an article still being featured on CNN’s home page, contains the same errors. Now there’s a blog they’re linking to that’s pointing out the error.

      For the most part bloggers are amateurs and they typically don’t have benefit of an editor before publication. So I do think mainstream media sources should be held to a higher standard, especially something as simple as spelling and grammar.

    Spelling errors and grammar mistakes are annoying but the notion that they are why “the press is going downhill” is absurd.

      Would you pay to read an article full of spelling and grammar errors? That’s the model they’re leaning to. I rest my case.
